The Thameslink rail line is benefiting from a £5.5 billion government investment programme, with the objective of eventually doubling its passenger capacity. As this means new trains and increased train lengths (from eight carriages to twelve), the platforms along the route require significant upgrading. Network rail is investing in its station infrastructure, increasing platform length and upgrading the overall status of passenger service provision.
Mill Hill Broadway is an extremely busy commuter station along this core route North/South across London, which is one of the most used in Europe.
Network Rail selected Vitec as its consultant for the station’s new public address (PA) system, with Vitec providing the design and project management solution to ensure seamless integration with other services. The challenging installation had to take place while the station was fully operation, adding technical constraints to the programme and design which Vitec was able to overcome. The works remit included management of the Network Rail approval process in accordance with RT/SP/TEL/30022.
To maintain good passenger communication along the increased platform lengths, it was necessary to add further PA speakers. Vitec designed a system upgrade which incorporated additional speakers sited on a total of 35 new and existing lighting columns, ensuring that even passengers at the extremes of the platform lengths can still clearly hear important announcements.
